Tanzania shocked hosts South Africa whom they beat 1-0 in a Cosafa Cup quaterfinal match  at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

A blunt Bafana Bafana outfit were made to pay for their wastefulness as Elias Maguri’s lone strike in the 18th minutes proving the difference, to send the boys out of the competition.

Both sides looked lively in the opening minutes, with Taifa Stars winning an early corner but failing to make the most of it, while at the other end, Himid Mkami produced a good run at goal but could only drag his shot wide of the mark.

Bafana had a good chance to take the lead after 11minutes as Jammie Webber was played in behind the defence, with the midfielder looking to curl one into the far corner with the outside of his foot, but he got it all wrong and skewed the ball behind for a goal-kick.

Taifa Stars continued creating the clearer chances and Thomas Ulimwengu again produced some magic down the wing to deliver a telling ball to the far post, although Erasto Nyoni seemed to miss-time his jump and failed to make a connection.

Elias Maguri gave the Tanzanians the lead when his angled shot beat a badly positioned Boalefa Pule in the 18th minute.

South Africa then had a good chance to test Aishi Manula in the Stars goal but failed to produce anything like the contact needed to beat the goalkeeper, who made light work of the defender’s tame effort.

Tanzania thought they should have had a penalty five minutes before half-time as the ball appeared to strike an arm in the area following a well-worked free-kick, but the referee was unmoved as play went on.

In the second-half, both teams created chances but weee few and far between, although Bafana did come close just before the hour mark after some good play between Cole Alexander and Frances Mela, whose shot lacked power and was eventually saved by the keeper.

The home team were bossing the possession almost exclusively but lacked the killer instinct in the final third, highlighted by Masales after 65 minutes as he made his run far too early and strayed several yards off-side to bring an abrupt end to some decent build-up play.

Tanzania made few changes and almost proved an immediate effect with Shomari Kapombe after putting in a decent delivery for Gadiel Kamagi, although the defender just failed to make contact as the ball fizzed behind.

Lorenzo Gordinho had the last chance in dying minutes to push the match into oenalties but his effort went over the bar.
