Southern Africa regional block COSAFA has threw its weight behind Madagascar FA boss Ahmad Ahmad’s candidature for CAF president in the next month’s polls.

The decision, deemed far reaching, was arrived at yesterday during COSAFA’s meeting of FA Presidents Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to a statement from SAFA, these were some of the resolutions arrived at yesterday:

-That they unanimously endorse the candidature of Madagascar FA President Ahmad Ahmad for CAF President in the upcoming CAF elections in Ethiopia.

-That COSAFA will only support sitting FA Presidents, vying for CAF or FIFA elections.

-And that COSAFA supports the equal representation both within CAF and FIFA positions and also support the different language category representation as articulated in recent CAF statutes.

New COSAFA boss Dr. Philip Chiyangwa said, “This was our first meeting since the new executive was voted into office and we are happy with the resolutions taken by the Council which I think will change the face of the region.”

With the COSAFA support, Ahmad is assured of the backing of the 14 member states under the umbrella body.

He will be up against the sitting President Issa Hayatou of Cameroon, who will be going for a record 8th term.
Hayatou, 71, is also the Senior Vice President of FIFA. He has been CAF President since 10 March 1988.

The 39th CAF General Assembly, where the election of new CAF President will be the main agenda, will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from March 16-17, 2017, with more than 380 delegates expected to attend.
