Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the first ever world player of the year at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich.
The Real Madrid and Portugal star fought off competition from Barcelona rival Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid’s Antonie Griezman to win the trophy.
He was also named in the FIFpro team of the year, alongside Barcelona pair Messi and Luis Suarez.
FIFA launched the Best Football Awards after ending its association with the Ballon D’Or.
In the same event Carli Lloyd of the United States was named the world’s best female player of year 2016.
Claudio Ranieri coaching Leicester City was named the best men’s coach, Silva Neid of Germany national team scooped female coach award, while Mohd Faiz Subri received the Puskas award for the best goal of 2016.
The fan award went to supporters of Borusia Dortmund and Liverpool who sang their anthem together during Europa League quarter finals in April.
Atletico Nacional were awarded the fair play award for deciding to award Chapecoence with the title as a show of peace and understanding in the aftermath of plane clash which killed 19 players and staff of the Brazilian side.
