Cairo giants Al Ahly and Zamalek booked their place in the last-16 of the CAF Champions League on Saturday.
Held to a goalless draw by Recreativo do Libolo in Luanda in the first leg of their first round tie, the Red Devils enjoyed a 2-0 win at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab Stadium to advance 2-0 on aggregate and keep alive their bid for a 9th continental crown.
Eighteen-year old playmaker Ramadan Sobhi put Ahly ahead after 10 minutes, with Ghanaian substitute John Antwi sealing the victory seven minutes from time.
Ahly’s arch rivals Zamalek enjoyed a similar result against Cameroon’s Union de Douala at Petro Sport Stadium, with goals from Mahmoud Kahraba and Ahmed Tawfik either side of half-time, to progress 3-0 over the two legs.
After scoring a crucial away goal in their 1-1 draw with Olympique Khouribga in Morocco in the first leg, Etoile du Sahel finished the job in Sousse with a 2-0 victory to advance 3-1 on aggregate.
Tunisia international Ahmed Akaichi put the locals ahead with a header five minutes into the second half, while Malian striker Dramé Michailou double their lead two minutes from time to send the Moroccans packing.
Defeated 0-1 by El Merreikh in front of their home crowd a week ago, Nigerian outfit Warri Wolves fell to the Soudanese giants with the same score line in Omdurman to bid farewell to Africa’s foremost club competition, as did Congo heavyweights AC Léopards who had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in Dolisie after falling 2-0 in South Africa in the first leg.
