Egypt and Algeria battled to a hard-fought draw in the United Arab Emirates on Monday in a dramatic showdown that served as their last preparation ahead of next month African World Cup qualifiers.
The Pharaohs took the lead just past the hour mark when Hamdy Fathy found the back of the net, marking his second goal in as many games during this international break in October. In the dying moments of injury time, Islam Slimani salvaged a draw for the Desert Warriors, ensuring a share of the spoils in this eagerly awaited match between North African rivals.
Both teams are now focused on the forthcoming African World Cup qualifiers set to take place next month.
From the onset, the Desert Warriors exerted immense pressure on the Egyptians, attempting to gain the upper hand. However, Egypt’s solid defense successfully thwarted the Algerian advances. As the game progressed, the Pharaohs regained control, with captain Mohamed Salah orchestrating the play and keeping the Algerian defenders on their toes.
A dangerous attempt on goal from Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet was expertly saved by the Algerian goalkeeper, while Salah saw his lobbed shot narrowly miss the target as it rebounded off the crossbar.
The turning point arrived in the 26th minute when Hany’s reckless challenge on Ahmad Touba led to his dismissal with a direct red card.
Surprisingly, Egypt’s performance hardly suffered as they maintained their tempo and continued to dominate the game.
In the 61st minute, Hamdy Fathy’s header at the far post, following a well-executed free-kick and an assist from Ali Gabr, provided Egypt with a hard-fought lead.
However, the Pharaohs missed crucial opportunities to further solidify their advantage, with Mostafa Mohamed and second-half substitute Omar Marmoush squandering clear-cut chances.
As the game neared its conclusion, Algeria intensified their pressure, and their determination paid off in the 93rd minute. An unmarked Slimani soared above the defense to head home a precise cross from Youcef Atal, securing the late equalizer.
