Energie FC custodian Damilola Wilson has set his sights on becoming the country’s number one goalkeeper and moving abroad.
The 19-year-old was outstanding for the 2017 Benin Premier League runners-up against Enyimba International of Nigeria over two legs in this year’s CAF Confederations Cup, which put Cotonou-based side on the brink of securing lucrative play-off spot.
Despite his impressive performances at club level, Wilson has failed to get called up to the senior national team but he is hopeful for recognition and bigger opportunities.
“I’m ready to play for Benin at the senior level now, and hopefully make my dream move to Europe also,”Wilson told Soka25east in an exclusive interview.
“The experience I have gathered cannot be quantified, even at my tender age. I’ve played in two different countries, because it was my dream to amass different styles of keeping the post from elsewhere,” adds Wilson.
Undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the local topflight this season, Wilson who has played for Benin’s U-17 and U-20 sides added there is reason to believe that he could be part of the set-up.
“It’s been a while I represented my country. The pride of a player is playing for father land. Although Benin currently has a lot of good goal keepers in the league, I am confident of my worth.
“Our national team are on their quest of redeeming past image. I will be glad to partake in such and I think the starting point should be from the forthcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers,”he concluded.
The former Bolowotan FC of Lagos goalie is having a good season so far and he is hoping his club would be crowned champions at the end of the season.
