Jimma City, Welwalo Adigrat University and Mekelle City have earned promotion to next season’s Ethiopia Premier League (EPL).
Both Jimma City and Welwalo Adigrat University earned promotion directly after finishing top of Group A and Group B of Super League respectively.
However,they had to clash in a play-off inorder to determine the winner of the league in a match that was played on Wednesday at Dire Dawa International Stadium where Jimma won 1-0 to be declared Super League Cup champions.
For Mekelle City they earned promotion after beating Hadiya Hossana in a playoff match after both sides finished in second position in their respective groups.
The determing match was played on Tuesday where Mekelle won the game 2-1 at Dire-Dawa Stadium.
Teams History
Welwalo Adgriat University is a football club based in Adigrat Town in northern Ethiopia near the neighbouring Eritrea.
Nicknamed the ‘Yellow Kings’ and with a huge fan base at the home town,Welwalo are joining the league for the first time in their history.
Jimma City FC
Famously known as ‘The Coffee’,it is one of the clubs in the country that also commands a good number of followers from their base in Jimma,Western Ethiopia.
A first timer in the league,they are going to provide a premiership taste for Jimma town football followers as they will be ‘replacing’another home town team Jimma Aba Bunna who were relegated from the league in the just concluded season.
Mekelle City FC
The newly promoted Mekelle hails from the town called Makelle Town located in northern Ethiopia near Eritrea which is part of Tigray State.
And after six years their promotion has been much welcomes by the region football fans who had yearned much for the league action.
In those good old days Tigray State fans enjoyed representations in premier league through Guna Nigid and Trans Ethiopia.
