ES Setif overcame fellow Algerian side MC Alger 2-1 in the 2018 CAF Champions League Group B game at the Stade du 5-Juillet-1962 in Algeria on Tuesday afternoon.
As a result, the Black Eagles book their place in the quarter-finals after finishing second in Group B, while the Dean crashed out of the tournament.
The Black Eagles got off to the perfect start as they broke the deadlock just five minutes into the encounter.
Akram Djahnit beat Alger goalkeeper Farid Chaal to make it 1-0 to Setif after the hosts’ defence was exposed.
The Dean tried to push for the equalizing goal, but they struggled to penetrate the Black Eagles defence.
The visitors managed to double their lead three minutes before the half-hour mark.
Abdelmoumene Djabou set-up Habib Bouguelmouna, who beat Chaal to make it 2-0 to Setif as the visitors extended their lead.
The Dean had to pull one back before the half-time break and they managed to do so through Walid Derrardja.
The former MC El Eulma forward beat Setif shot-stopper Moustapha Zeghba to make it 2-1 after Alger were awarded a penalty.
Setif were leading 2-1 at the interval following a lively first-half.
The Dean began the second-half well and they had a chance to restore parity through Hichem Nekkache nine minutes into the second-half.
The marksman placed his effort over the crossbar from close range as the hosts missed a glorious opportunity.
Setif continued to push forward in search of their third goal as Derrardja’s effort narrowly missed the target on the half-hour mark.
Islam Arous was introduced by Alger coach Bernard Casoni in the 71st minute as the hosts looked to level matters.
The Black Eagles then decided to sit back and defend their narrow lead in the closing stages of the encounter.
Setif were able to contain Alger in the dying minutes of the game and ultimately, they emerged 2-1 winners on the day.
