Group B teams of the CECAFA qualifications of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Tanzania 2019 waited until the final match day to know the identity of the semi final qualifiers. Two games were played simultaneously in Dar Es-Salam on Wednesday (22 Aygust 2018) where Ethiopia defeated Kenya 4-2 while Uganda thrashed Djibouti 8-0, to see Ethiopia and Uganda reaching the last four.
Uganda and Kenya entered the final match day with 6 points each, and knowing they need a win to reach the semi finals, while Ethiopia were leading the pack with 9 points and needing just a point.
At Chamazi stadium, Uganda recorded the second biggest winning margin of the qualifications, beating Djibouti 8-0. Najib Yiga elected himself as man of the match scoring a hattrick, while Ibrahim Jumaa scored twice, with Abdel Wahed Iddi, Kakere Thomas and Sikaga Davies completing the rout. Uganda raised their tally to 9 points to go second.
Meanwhile Ethiopia defeated Kenya 4-2 to guarantee the top spot and join Uganda to the semis. Bainey Baisey grabbed a personal hattrick with Minstot Wakagera scoring late in the game for Ethiopia, while Alphonse Omega and Keith Imbala scored consolation goals for the Kenyans.
Ethiopia topped Group B with the maximum 12 points compared to Kenya’s six.
The National Stadium in Dar Es-Salam will host both semi final clashes, where Ethiopia takes on Rwanda, followed by hosts Tanzania locking horns with Uganda.
Nine (9) teams participated in CECAFA U-17 qualifications, with Kenya, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan and Djibouti knocked out from the group stage. The winner will represent the region in next year’s U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Tanzania.
