Ethiopia Football Federation (EFF) cracked the whip on Friday after they sacked their Portuguese coach Mariano Barreto.
The decision was arrived after lengthy talks between the EFF executive Led by President Junedin Basha. A close source at EFF told www.soka25east.com that the decision to sack the coach was arrived at after he failed to deliver on his promise one year after being appointed.
Speaking to www.soka25east.com EFF President Junedin Basha however failed to confirm about the sack intimating “I cannot confirm anything at this moment but please call me later in the afternoon after we deliberate on the issue before issuing a conclusive statement “Basha said.
Mariano Barreto was appointed in the year 2014 March taking over from Sewnet Bishaw who had successful stint with the team as Ethiopia qualified for Afcon 2013 after 31 years .
Mariano Barreto’s tenure has been marred by poor results only managing to win one match against Mali in the 2015 an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier but they were later knocked out ans failed to qualify for the tourney.
Recently Mariano has bitterly complained about lack of cooperation from the federation alluding to the fact that they have failed to organize for friendly matches for the team leading to disquiet among the players and fans.
Efforts to reach coach Mariano for his comments were fruitless as he had traveled to his native Portugal for Easter holidays.
