Former Kenya international Bernard Agunda died in his home in Nairobi on Monday .
Agunda,who was called ‘Makambo’ in his playing days was one of the greatest players to come out of Kenya.
Born in Western Kenya,Agunda was the talent in the Harambee Stars squad that won the 2002 Castle Lager Cup under coach Jacob Ghost Mulei.
At club level, Agunda was in the Kenya Breweries team that won Council of East and Central Africa (Cecafa) Cup in 2008.
Football followers across the continent mourned Agunda’s death terming him a legend.
Africa top journalist Collins Okinyo led tributes for the fallen star alongside former Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’Mulei.
Okinyo said: It’s a sad day learning of the death of former Kenyan International Bernard Agunda Makambo. It’s shocking as this was a man who always called as we talked on many issues.He was lethal as a striker in his days wishing his family comfort at this sad time.RIP my man.”
On his part Mulee said,”I pay tribute to Bernard Agunda ‘Makambo’…midfield general of Tusker and Harambee Stars won Castle Cupmin 2013.RIP maestro.
Former Mathare United midfielder Simeon Mulama wrote:”R.I.P Comrade:Bernard Agunda “Makambo”.That’s how we said Hi when we met, and bye when we parted, this time we never had a chance to say goodbye!! You will surely be missed!! Rest Well Bro,”
Agunda’s cause of death remains unknown.
