Former Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Enock Mwepu has been rushed to hospital after a suspected heart attack.
The Zambian midfielder was forced to retire from professional football in October after being diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition. However, reports from the Zambian observer understand he has endured, what is believed to have been, a heart attack on Sunday morning.
He has reportedly been rushed to University Teaching Hospital for immediate treatment.
According to sources in Zambia, the incident occurred while he was driving towards Kabangwe, a small town on the outskirts of the capital Lusaka. At present, his condition is currently unknown, as there are yet to have been any updates.
“Mwepu was driving along Great North Road near Kabangwe area, he was heading out of town,” a source told the Zambian outlet.
“So, its like he started having obvious heart issues. When he started having cardiac arrest, he started driving zig zag. Then he eventually parked, and came out of the vehicle and fell.”
Meanwhile, Brighton have provided in update regarding Mwepu.
“The club can provide the following update on Enock Mwepu, in response to media reports.
“Enock was taken unwell in Zambia and is currently undergoing precautionary checks.
“Our medical team is in communication with the hospital to assist if required.
“The club would like to thank the many well wishers for their messages and support.
The club nor Enock wish to provide any further comment at this stage.”
