Gabon fooball federation (FEGAFOOT) in a sudden twist of events, have handed Jorge Costa a six month contract extension.

The body had announced early July a decision to terminate Jorge’s two year deal six months to the Total African Cup of Nations which the country host from January 21 – February 12,2017 owing to poor results by the national team, the Panthers.

Gabon lost their last match 2-1 to reigning African champions Ivory Coast.

In a statement, FEGAFOOT stated they take their part of blame for Panthers dismal run, and have considered the need for harmony and unity in the technical bench ahead of AFCON.

“Taking into account the.responsibilities of all parties directly or indirectly involved in polluting the environment of the national team, it is clear that the current coaching staff can not alone bear full responsibility for this situation. The FEGAFOOT now takes its share in ensuring that some invisible hands are very far from the Panthers,”

“Thus, guided by the proximity of events, FEGAFOOT decided to renew the coaching staff led by Jorge Costa for a period of 6 months.”

The Panthers target a final berth in Nations Cup and hence future contract extension will depend on the achievement of the set goal.

Jorge was one of the best paid national team manager in Africa, a fact he laid bare.

“I receive 70,000 euros a month, a salary which makes me the best paid (manager) in Africa, it’s because I’m the best coach,” The former Porto and Standard Liege player Costa said.
