Ghana U20 soccer team needed Yaw Yeboah’s 90th minute penalty to settle for a draw in their first match of the ongoing FIFA U20 World cup in New Zealand.
Austria took the lead in early in the 50th minute when Gschweidi Bernd scored from a nice piece of footwork. In a match played in seemingly wet conditions, unfamiliar with the Young Black Stars, Austria looked the better side; they could have doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Markus Blutsch shot over from what looked like a good scoring position.
Ghana, who was the 2009 champions, restored parity in the dying minutes when Yeboah was brought down the box by Laimer. He stepped up and sent the Austria keeper Casali the wrong way.
The other Group B match played also ended in a 2-2 draw when tournament’s favourites Argentina were held by lowly Panama.
The tournament continues with other African countries Mali, Senegal and Nigeria featuring too.
