Ahmed Gomaa scored a brace which helped his team,Al Masry, pick up maximum points in a CAF Confederation Cup Group B match against Uniao Desportiva do Songo of Mozambique at Port Said Stadium on Sunday night.
Gomaa was on top of his form and his presence on the pitch was felt on 36th minute and on 52nd minutes respectively giving the Egyptians a deserved win.
Masry played some excellent incisive football early on and were in front minutes after half an hour mark, when Mohamed ‘Grendo’ Abdel-Latif strode forward out of midfield and from the wing sent a cross that met Gomaa who headed in to open the scoring for the hosts.
Just five minutes later, the Masry were awarded another free kick in a similar position on the left hand side of the field.Bance stepped up but his shot went over the bar.
The hosts remained on top for the rest of the first half without really opening up the UD Songo defence, although visiting keeper Pendura was called into action a minute after the restart when he did well to stand firm and keep Mostafa Shata out at the near post.
The home crowd were treated to a display of wonderful football as the Songo turned on the style although it was only in the 49th minute that the next chance arrived, when Celso Mamo smashed over the bar from close range.
Gomaa netted the second three minutes later when he latched onto another neat pass from ‘Grendo’ to race past the defender and score from a close-range.
Sundowns keeper Ahmed Masoud then produced a breath-taking save to keep out a pile-driver from Eusebio Manwere three minutes from time, ensuring a clean sheet and a perfect evening for the home side.
The win win helped Masry top Group B with three points with a better goal difference ahead of Moroccan side Renaissance Sportive de Berkane who defeated Al-Hilal of Sudan 1-0 earlier in the day.
Masry will face Al-Hilal on 16 May in Omdurman while Uniao Desportiva do Songo will host Renaissance Sportive de Berkane.
