Hosts Ethiopia defeated Sudan 5-4 on penalties to finish third at the ongoing Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup at the National Stadium in Addis Ababa on Saturday afternoon.
Elias Mamo gave the Walia Antelopes the lead in the57thminute but Sudan’s Walaaeldin Musa Yagoub equalized in the 82nd minute as both sides settled for a 1-1 draw at full time.
The winner of this tie would be decided on penalties without playing extra time according to the rules and regulations of the regional tournament.
Atif Khalid Eltayib converted from the spot with a fine finish before Gatoch Panom equalized for Ethiopia.
Ethiopian goalkeeper Kidane Yidnekachew then saved Atahir El Tahir’s effortto give Ethiopia an advantage before Behailu Girma netted to hand his side a 2-1 lead.
Mohammed Koko Abdalla scored Sudan’s second but Addisu Tesfaye handed Ethiopia a 3-2 lead. Walaaldin Musa Yagoub scored and in dramatic fashion took off his boot and the referee booked him for the act.
Elias Mamo scored his side’s fourth but Sudanese goalkeeper Akram Elhadi Salim equalized before taking his place between the goalposts to try and deny Bereket Yisehaq but the latter converted easily to hand the hosts a third place finish at the
