Gor Mahia suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Petro de Luanda in a Caf Confederations Cup Group D clash at Estádio 11 de Novembro in Angola on Wednesday evening.
The hosts claimed all three points thanks to goals from Manguxi and Toni. The visitors battled until the final whistle, but could only manage a mere consolation in added time through Nicholas Kipkirui
Os Tricolores raced into the lead as early as the 13th minute. Tiago Azulao set up Manguxi who made no mistake from the edge of the penalty area – guiding a rising shot past Boniface Oluoch in the K’Ogalo goal.
Toni doubled the hosts lead in the 37th minute after losing his marker and nodding Mateus’ pin-point cross into the back of the net.
Missing key players in Jacques Tuyisenge and Dennis Oliech through suspension and injury respectively, Gor Mahia showed great fight and resilience and were duly rewarded for their efforts in the second minute of added time.
Kipkirui’s looping header though proved too little too late for the Kenyans who failed to build on their emphatic in over Zamalek in the opening round of group stage fixtures.
Petro next travel to Egypt to take on the White Knight while Gor Mahia will play host to NA Hussein in Nairobi on the 24th. The Algerians are away to Zamalek in Alexandria later this evening.
