Gor Mahia FC, SportPesa shirt sponsorship deal that was suspended last month alngside that of their arch rivals AFC Leopards over breach of “hooliganism clause” has been reinstated.
SportPesa took the step after ugly scenes ensued during a league match involving Gor Mahia and Tusker contrary to parts of the deal which prohibited hooliganism – section of K’Ogalo fans caused chaos after a contraversial penalty was awarded to the Brewers in the dying minutes of the match leading to a 1-0 loss at Nyayo Stadium.
One fan particularly stormed the field of play after the final whistle to attack the linesman who ruled against them.
At a meeting in Hulingham, Nairobi attended by Gor Mahia Chairman Ambrose Rachier, KPL CEO Jack Oguda and SportPesa representative Karuri, the union was revived with all parties agreeing to join hands and fight the hooliganism menace.
A raft of measures to help deal with the vice were adopted including;
. Club stewards will be vetted and employed by Sportpesa
. Pre-match breafings to be done a day to a match
. Plain-clothed police officers will be deployed to fish out trouble makers before they pounce
. Incompetent referees who actions have instigated violent reactions from fans will be punished; this is already happening.
