Gustavo Ndong Edu was elected as the new president of Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (Feguifut) on Saturday morning at the Annual General Meeting in Malabo.
Ebu who is the out-going vice-president of the football association replaced Adres Jorge Mbaino who has served as the federation’s president since 2014.
The new football boss narrowly beat former second vice-president Teodomiro Nse with 16 votes to 12 votes at the elective congress.
“My priorities for now are the national and international competitions, the reorganization of the federation will come after,” said Edu in his acceptance speech.
The electoral race for the Fegufut presidency was marked by the withdrawal of Andrés Jorge Mbomio and that of Bienvenido Ateba Mangue, who withdrew his candidacy just before the start of the voting in unclear circumstances.
Edu presented his candidacy based on three main points namely optimisation of the operation of the administrative structure, organisation of spots competitions at all levels and transparency throughout the federation.
The new president is well known in the global stage. In July 2016, he was suspended for two years after being convicted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) having been found for attempts to offer money to the match officials of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier between Equatorial Guinea and Mali on 10 April 2016.
However, three months after claiming his innocence and after an inquiry, the CAF Appeals Panel quashed the decision of the Disciplinary Committee after they found the wording of the rule was flawed.
