Ghana National Football team Captain Asamoah Gyan has become the second player to score in 6 consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments after Samuel Eto’o (2000-2010). He scored Ghana’s only goal in the one nil win over Mali on Saturday which also tied him with Wilberforce Mfum as Ghana’s AFCON topscorer with 8 goals.
Ghana’s most capped player scored his first Africa Cup of Nations goal in 2008. He also scored in 2010,2012, 2013, 2015 and now 2017.
The former Sunderland striker had a dry spell prior to Satuday’s historical goal as it took him 587 days to score a goal for Ghana since he last scored on June 14th ,2015 ( a brace against Mauritius).
Mali happens to be his favourite victims, as it is the only team he has scored against more than once (2 goals) at the continental showpiece (AFCON). The other six teams he has scored against are Guinea, Angola, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger and Algeria.
The national team all-time topscorer is just a goal shy of hitting 50 goals for his nation. His first Afcon goal came on January 20, 2008 vs Guinea while his first Ghana National Football team goal came back in 2003 in a world cup qualifier against Somalia.
