New Zesco United catch Anthony “Viera” Akumu is beaming with confidence as he starts new life at the Zambian Super League champions.
Akumu who recently switched to “Team Yaziko” from Sudan’s Al Khartoum on a two year deal is however very much a live to the huge task ahead, but admits it is not insurmountable.
He talked to the club’s website yesterday, Wednesday 6, after the second day of preseason training, revealing his dreams and ambitions for the back to back champions.
“I’m happy to join Zesco United, it’s a great team. I want to achieve more with Zesco for the time I will be here, and to help them retain the league and also do well in the CAF Champions League,”
“I’m ready for the challenge, I know it won’t be easy but I’m ready for the challenge. It’s a matter of hard work and endurance, everything that is needed, I’m ready for it,”
Nicknamed “Viera” by the adoring Gor Mahia fans after the former French midfield General Patrick Viera during his loyal service to the Kenyan Champions, Akumu is a ball winner per excellence, his long range passes and powerful bullet shots, has defined his style of play over the years.
He has vowed to grab every opportunity that will cross his path with both hands and defend the logo to best of his ability.
“Any chance that I will get to represent Zesco, I will grab it with both hands. Football is a learning game and profession and that’s why we train.”
Regarded as one of the most disciplined, focused and hardworking Kenyan international, the lanky midfielder will not feel lonely at the southern African nation, for Zesco is now home to two other Kenyans.
This after 2015 Kenyan Premier League golden boot winner Jesse Jackson Were also joined the Coach George Lwandamina’s side, the two will be welcomed by David “Calabar” Owino who’s already an established name at the club after a wonderful first season.
