Dumisani Zuma scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 Absa Premiership win for Kaizer Chiefs over Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday evening.
Victory moves the Amakhosi up to sixth place on the log standings, five points off top spot, while defeat for the Team of Choice leaves them rooted to the bottom of the log standings, four points from safety.
Both goalkeepers were called into early action at the 2010 FIFA World Cup final venue with Richard Ofori denying Leonardo Castro while Bruce Bvuma – in for the out-of-form Daniel Akpeyi – had to be at his best to keep Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya’s miscued clearance from finding the back of his own net.
Nazeer Allie had to be at his best to deny the Amakhosi the lead on the stroke of half-time. The experienced defender alert to keep Khama Billiat’s header from crossing the line before jumping to his feet to deny Zuma’s follow up effort with Ofori stranded.
Mohau Mokate squandered a gilt-edged chance for the hosts straight from the kick-off following the interval. The forward fired wide having beaten Bvuma to the ball.
He was made to rue the missed chance as Chiefs hit the front through Zuma in the 50th minute. The attacker finishing with aplomb following a well-weighted pass from Castro.
Maritzburg pushed forward in the closing stages in search of the equaliser, but the Glamour Boys held on for all three points.
