Kariobangi Sharks managed to book their FKF Shield Cup semi-final slot after their game against Bungoma Supers Stars went the distance at Kenyatta Stadium on Sunday.
The first half ended 0-0 as both teams failed to create enough chances to warrant an opener. Then Idd Wasike surprisingly opened the scoring for the Bungoma-based side in the 78th minute after a lapse of concentration in Kariobangi Sharks backline.
Eric Kapaito then equalized for the defending champions in the 83rd minute and forced the game into penalties.
Kariobangi Sharks scored four of their penalties while Bungoma Super Stars managed to score just two. Duke Abuya, Sven Yidah, Nixon Omondi and Thomas Teka scored successfully to hand the Kenyan Premier League side the win.
Patrick Kwitonda and Christopher Masika scored the two penalties for Bungoma Super Stars while Hillary Simiyu and Boniface Munyendo failed to beat Gad Mathews in goal.
Sharks have now managed to make it into the Shield Cup’s semi-finals for the fourth straight time. They joined Bandari, SS Assad and KCB. Initially, Bungoma Super Stars had beaten AFC Leopards and Sofapaka to progress to the quarter-final stage.Meanwhile, in the early kick-off involving another KPL side KCB and National Super League side Bidco United, KCB ran through 4-1 victors to book their berth in the competition’s penultimate stage.
