Kenya fell 2-1 to Gabon in a hard-fought Group F World Cup qualifier at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Despite their efforts to stage a comeback, the Harambee Stars were unable to overcome the Panthers who remain unbeaten in their campaign and have now accumulated 15 points from six matches.
The match began with both teams on the offensive, and Gabon quickly set the tone with an early free kick in a dangerous area. Guelor Kanga’s attempt was thwarted by Kenya’s alert goalkeeper, Ian Otieno.
However, Gabon soon found the back of the net when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang capitalised on a brilliant pass from Kanga, chipping the ball over Otieno in the 16th minute. Kenya had their chances to respond, but their forwards struggled with timing, frequently being caught offside.
The first half concluded with Gabon leading. In the second half, Gabon maintained their attacking momentum. A shot from Aubameyang struck Erick Ouma’s arm in the penalty area and resulted in a penalty.
Aubameyang confidently converted the spot kick in the 52nd minute, deepening Kenya’s challenges. The Harambee Stars fought back, and their persistence paid off when Ouma’s pass found Michael Olunga, who tapped in to reduce the deficit.
Despite mounting pressure from the hosts, Gabon held firm to secure all three points.
