Kenya-Sugar belt derby ends in stalemate

By Austin Oduor Otieno,

A goalless draw in Kisumu summed up what a derby of any kind would offer fans.

The sugar belt derby, a match involving two clubs from the sugar belt region of Western Kenya ended in a 0-0 draw at the Kisumu county’s Moi Stadium today august 16th 2015.

Just a day after another Sugar belt team Muhoroni Youth, sponsored by Muhoroni sugar had shocked hosts Western Stima, Awendo based Sony Sugar travelled to the lakeside City of Kisumu to seek a date with fellow millers Chemelil Sugar from the Nyando Sugar belt.

Both teams came into the match after registering draws in their last League fixtures with Sony holding Ulinzi to a 1-1 draw while chemelil held Bandari to a goalless draw.

chemelil just 4 points above the relegation zone really needed a win to move further away from Nakuru All Stars and Nairobi City Stars while their counterparts Sony Sugar ranked 12 had hoped to win to go above Thika United.

Alloyce Mangi and Meshack Karani were a constant threat at the Sony goal but were victims of missed chances. Mangi came close in the 41st minute

On resumption both teams played cautiously but it was Chemelil more stronger in attack.  Meshack Karani failed to score  a one on one with  Allan Owiny blasting wide in the 71st minute.

Sony Sugar too were culprits of missed chances when Marwa Chamberi failed to connect a Justin Monda cross.

With just a minute to go,former Sony player Dennis Onkangi almost killed off the game but his effort was well handled by Ugandan Allan Owiny in goal.

Chemelil  will again be at the Moi stadium next weekend to host Nakuru All Stars while Sony travel to the capital to meet KCB.
