By Fredrick Nadduli,
While the rest of East Africa and to a wider context the continent is making huge strides in matters development, Kenya has stubbornly refused to jump onto the bandwagon, and has stagnated, much to the chagrin of football enthusiasts, who see hope, but remain helpless at the hands of a “see no evil, hear no evil” administration in the shape of Football Kenya Federation.
However, if recent developments are anything to go by, change is in the air, and all the chaff that has blurred the country’s football vision is about to be swept away by the inevitable whirlwind slowly gathering pace.
CHANGE
Kenyans are tired to the bone with incumbent Sam Nyamweya and his team, for obvious reasons. Anything that provides an option for change sounds like an irresistible offer, and new kid on the block Nick Mwendwa appears ready to be the change the sport craves. As goes the old adage, the only permanent thing in life is change.
PARADIGM SHIFT
The game needs a whole new paradigm shift going forward. The current regime has been tried and tested, and found seriously wanting. Mwendwa has promised a shift from the norm.
YOUTH
When people in authority stay too long, they tend to relapse in the comfort zone and thereby forced to conform to the dictates of the old order. Thinking outside the box becomes a herculean task thereby creating a massive vacuum. The youth, with fresh ideas, are ready to take up the mantle. Nick Mwendwa is barely fourty, but his blueprint may find a snug space on the table of men.
GRASSROOT TOUCH
As Chairman of Kariobangi Sharks and having involved himself with youth development, the youthful contender remains in touch with reality on the ground. His predecesors, perhaps too drunk with power, have lost the grassroot effect and are too aloof to notice the perils that stalk them.
BREATH OF FRESH AIR
When people grow tired of something, they will go for anything that provides them with a fresh start, never mind the challenges that come with new beginnings. Nick may be the new aroma that comes to provide a fresh scent across the landscape after a rather heavy skunk that has irritated Kenyan nostrils for many a year, but which we have had to endure, until recently.
If past present developments are anything to go by, Kenyan football may just have an early Christmas present in the form of Nick Mwendwa.
