Kenyan Premier league produced electric performances over the weekend with the biggest being the Homeboyz humbling of AFC Leopards as Sofapaka continued their renaissance.
Allan Wanga was on the mark as Tusker drew with Western Stima, Ushuru conceded twice in the last three minutes against recovering Sofapaka while Muhonoro Youth just did enough to prevail on Thika United in Saturday’s action.
Kakamega Home Boyz tear AFC Leopards to shreds at Mumias while Posta Rangers held struggling Gor Mahia and Mathare United nipped City Stars at Nyayo in Sunday matches.
Posta Rangers 0-0 Gor Mahia (Nyayo Stadium)
There was no respite for league reigning champions Gor Mahia as they succumbed to a third consecutive goalless draw.
The glamour side failed to go past the Zedekiah Otieno-coached team that fielded six defensive players, their intentions all clear. And it worked as the match petered to a scoreless result.
Kakamega Homeboyz 4-1 AFC Leopards (Mumias Sports Complex)
Andrew Kulecho opened the scoring for the hosts against their “visitors” in the fifth minute after getting the better of goalkeeper Ian Otieno, before Sunday Mutuku drew the youthful custodian off his line nine minutes later to double the scores.
Andrew Murunga then announced his presence on the field with a goal on 28th minute as Ingwe struggled to make an impression in this match, perhaps feeling the straining of a trip to Dar es Salaam days earlier.
Kepha Aswani, who entered as replacement for Paul Kiongera, pulled one goal back for Ingwe on 44 minutes with a powerful shot from 18 yards for his 11th goal of the season.
But any comeback that Leopards, who also use Mumias as their home ground, may have haboured was snuffed out a minute later when Eugene Ambulwa scored an own goal as Ingwe’s brave five-match unbeaten run came to an emphatic end.
Mathare United 1-0 City Stars (Nyayo Stadium)
The match looked destined for a draw before a special piece of play eventually separated the two sides.
Robinson Kamura stepped forward to score with a marvelously taken free kick in the 71st minute that could be a candidate for goal of the season.
Tusker 1-1 Western Stima (Kenyatta Stadium)
Kenya international Allan Wanga struck in the ninth minute to give the brewers an early lead while notching up his third goal in as many matches for his new club.
Stima captain Joash Onyango, however, cancelled Wanga’s efforts immediately after the restart with a powerful header that Tusker goalkeeper David Okello couldn’t deal with.
Muhoroni Youth 1-0 Thika United (Muhoroni Stadium)
Former Nakuru All Stars striker Lwamba Bebeto converted a penalty for Muhoroni in the 35th minute as he continued to thrive in his new found form.
The result marked Thika’s first defeat in three games while snapping Muhoroni three-match winless streak.
Ushuru 0-2 Sofapaka (Nyayo Stadium)
Ushuru conceded two goals in three minutes to Sofapaka who lifted themselves from the bottom of the league table for the first time since March.
Ugandan Charles Melubo found the back of the net in the 86th minute after capitalizing on a goal mouth melee.
Three minutes later, Brian Magonya doubled the scores for Batoto ba Mungu with a glancing header off a long cross floated in by Moses Odhiambo.
This was the first back-to-back wins this season for Sofapaka, and in fact, their fourth win in 22 outings in this competition as they look to spark a run out of the relegation zone.
