Basement side Sofapaka surprisingly hammered relegation zone compatriots City Stars, Bandari held champions Gor Mahia at Kisumu while Chemelil Sugar edged out Muhoroni Youth as Thika United and Kakamega Homeboyz settled to a draw at Kasarani in Sunday’s matches.

On Saturday AFC Leopards came from two goals down to beat Ushuru at Mumias, Sony Sugar blew away Western Stima at Afraha as league leaders Tusker edged out battling Mathare United at Kasarani in a high-scoring Saturday.

AFC Leopards 3-2 Ushuru (Mumias Sugar Sports Complex)

The tax men went ahead in the 18th minute through Maurice Odipo, who took full advantage of slack marking to turn in a corner delivered by Heritier Luvualu past Ingwe custodian Ian Otieno.

Dennis Wafula doubled the scores 11 minutes later, capitalizing on Otieno’s spillage of a shot by Roosevelt Blatty. The goal left a stunned Mumias stand eerily silent.

Ingwe lead striker Kepha Aswani, was brought in in the second half to telling effect. He powerfully headed in the ball in the 64th minute from a lightning quick Leopards counter to begin a remarkable comeback.

Bernard Ongoma struck from long range shortly afterward to level matters and get the Leopards following on the stands back at full cry.

Aswani pounced on a loose ball – more a horrible blunder from the opposing defence – in the 79th minute to send it past Ushuru custodian Shabaan Odhoji, and complete his brace and Leopards comeback while increasing his season’s tally to 10 goals. Aswani has now scored in three consecutive matches.

Mathare United 0-2 Tusker (Kasarani Stadium, 4.15pm)

Clifford Alwanga drew the first blood for the league leaders, turning quickly before firing a long range shot past Mathare goalkeeper Robert Mboya in the 18th minute.

Allan Wanga, the brewers’ midseason acquisition, doubled the scores in the 55th minute after Mboya had done everything to stop a dangerous shot from Noah Wafula but was left exposed.

Western Stima 0-3 Sony Sugar

Sony Sugar were indeed unstoppable in this encounter as they swamped Western Stima, who were coming to this match fresh from a 4-0 mauling of Ushuru three days earlier.

Sony went ahead on 16 minutes via Masoud Juma’s pile driver. Victor Ademba doubled the sugar millers’ lead with another powerful effort midway through the second half before Amos Asembeka completed the rout minutes to the end.

Could this signify the resurgence of Sony who held Gor goalless 76 hours earlier?

Gor Mahia 0-0 Bandari (Moi Stadium)

This result marked the fourth draw in six games for league champions Gor Mahia who now appear to be floundering in the league.

K’Ogalo spurned their chances against the visiting dockers, club top scorer Jacques Tuyisenge twice firing over the bar when he was well sighted on goal.

Bandari’s Dan Sserunkuma also had a big chance to score against his former club in the second half when he beat his markers but shot across the goalmouth when finding the target looked the likely outcome.

Sofapaka 5-0 City Stars (Kenyatta Stadium)

This was Sofapaka’s first win in 11 outings, and what a win it was.

Enock Okwil sent them ahead in the 11th minute with a rasping shot. Jafar Salim then doubled the scores 26 minutes later from a counter attack.

In the 60th minute, busy Okwil was brought down inside the penalty area, and dead ball specialist Noah Abich stepped up to duly convert the awarded spot kick. Further goals from Moses Odhiambo and Isaac Mutanga put the game well beyond City Stars’ reach.

Thika United 1-1 Kakamega Homeboyz (Kasarani)

Andrew Murunga handed Kakamega Homebboyz the lead just 23 minutes into the game.

They could however only hold this lead for eight minutes as on song Nigerian Onwudi Chibueze levelled matters after receiving a clever back heel from Eugene Mukangula for his second goal in as many matches.

Chemelil Sugar 1-0 Muhoroni Youth (Chemelil Stadium)

The home team scored in the 90th minute through former Gor Mahia defender Jared Obwoge who pounced on a loose ball in the goalmouth after Farouk Shikalo had parried a dangerous shot from Jeffery Odeny.
