Gor Mahia players left the State House smiling after President Uhuru Kenyatta handed them a Sh1 million ($11,000) cash reward for winning the league.
The president also gave the club Sh2 million ($ 22,000) to prepare for next season and also promised to help the club get a shirt sponsor.
Further, Gor’s top fan Jared Abongó popularly known as Jaro Soja was seconded to the Stadium Management Board on the president’s directive.
Gor players had been invited to the State House by the president after their success this season. The president met the players in a short closed door session where he offered them the token.
The president who later had a photo session with the players donning the popular green Gor Mahia jersey with his name Kenyatta on the back told Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier not to worry about sponsorship as he would look into it.
“We presented to the president our issues, we told him we lack a sponsor after Tuzo did not renew their sponsorship to which he told us not to worry about it he would handle it,” said Rachier.
“On behalf of Gor Mahia, we appreciate what the president has done for us. This is a one in a lifetime opportunity for the players to meet the president,” added Rachier.
It is the first time a Kenyan Premier League winning club has presented the trophy to the president at the State House. The last time Gor Mahia team was at State House was in 1987 when the club won the. Africa Cup Winners Cup.
