Mathare United coach Francis Kimanzi has been named the Kenyan Premier League coach of the month for February ahead of Gor Mahia’s Dylan Kerr.

Despite posting similar results in the month, Kimanzi, whose team in currently top of the log having played three more matches than second placed Gor, secured ten votes from the award’s panelists against Kerr’s six.

“We added a bit of experience in the squad but most importantly the young players learned from last year’s games. A lot of them had little or no experience but now they look quite at home.

“The league is very competitive and long so we are just taking one game as it comes and play to win every match,” Kimanzi, who is also the coach of Kenya U23 team said.

The Slum Boys beat millers Nzoia Sugar and Sony before controversially settling for a draw against Ulinzi Stars in a match a valid goal that could have handed them a win was erroneously disallowed.

But they bounced back to hit fancied Sofapaka to finish the month unscathed.

Gor on the other hand registered three straight wins against Nakumatt, Zoo FC and Kariobangi Sharks before being held to a barren draw by Tusker FC.

Kimanzi tipped his prolific striker Cliff Nyakeya, who has been banging in goals for fun, to excel in future.

“Nyakeya has done well and we are all happy about his contribution. He is that finisher every team needs and he can only get better with time.

“It’s too early to say where he will be at the end of the season but he is destined for bigger stages.”
