As he says he will back the two Kitwe Teams
Kitwe United made it to the super League with that Victory away in Mansa. Thanks to their technical team and players.
Though there is Kitwe One who has always given the backing to this team on their route to Super League. Known as a staunch Nkana supporter, the coming of Kitwe United is definitely going to split some loyalty which is now coming into play. This is the Mayor of Kitwe, young Christopher Kang’ombe.
But then while others will be thinking that it will be a challenge for Kitwe one to choose which team will receive his support, he sees it as a great opportunity for him and the people of Kitwe football wise.
He doesn’t see it as a challenge as he spoke to Bwezani With Zed Football.
“Kitwe United is a Kitwe City Council project and my focus this year is to see to it that the team remains in the Super Division. I will support all Kitwe based teams as Kitwe Mayor when they are facing opposition from outside.” said Kang’ombe.
That is how the teams will receive support from the Mayor. When the two teams play each other, am sure the mayor will be hoping for a draw as he surely has his heart on the two teams.
The man literally travelled to Mansa on the last game of Kitwe United as they confirmed qualification into the super league and before that game his message to the fans was staying away from hooliganism.
There is this unwritten story that depicts Kitwe United fans as kings of insults during games and if the mayor had that strong passion to educate the fans about hooliganism before the game, the thought would be that he knows them too well. When asked about it, he doesn’t call the fans as hooligans but as passionate fans.
“Bwezani, Kitwe United has played premier league football before and even won the BP Top 8. The supporters are not hooligans they are just passionate who love their team so much like any other group of fans towards their team.”
The Mayor is confident that this team is not coming as mare participants in the league but a competitor and in his words Kitwe United will not go back to division one but rather stay up and here is his reasoning:
“The team will survive for two reasons. Players have team spirit required to win games especially at home and the second reason is Kitwe City Council has given authority to technical bench to reinforce with three or four players to provide competition.” affirmed the Mayor.
They are not leaving any chance for hooliganism and the Mayor concludes:
“We shall continue taking steps as club sponsors to prevent the culture of hooliganism to be seen at Garden Park. The sensitization is ongoing and it’s working. Take note it’s not only Kitwe United but all teams need to make this work with their fans.”
Kitwe United is not new in Zambian football and have been around for a long while with two honors in the BP Top eight as well as one honor in the Challenge Cup.
They too won the Heinrich Cup also called Chibuku Cup in 1970 beating Kabwe Warriors 1 nil in the finals.
Perhaps were Kitwe United has had good run is in the BP top eight. They won the title twice beating Kabwe Warriors 1-0 in 1971 and Zanaco 1-0 in 2004.
In the league they are yet to hold the title as they have been on and off. But they are back after 11 years in the lower league. The momentum to stay up is there and that will have to be assessed when the 2018 season kicks off.
Welcome Chingalika as they are popularly known.
