By Evans Oduor,
Having scored his third consecutive hat trick in trick last weekend while playing against Thika United. Tusker prolific striker has set to surpass his target for the season. Jesse Were has said his scoring target this season remains the same and anything above that will be a bonus.
“At the beginning of the season I said my target was 20 goals and I am just one goal short. And with 10 matches remaining I believe I will surpass my self-set mark,” a bullish Were said.
Were who has now scored 19 goal is the current leading goal scorer and has is eyes set on winning the Golden Boot award which has been previous won by Dan Sserunkuma, while playing for Gor Mahia, top scorer last season with 16 goals. The year before it was Jacob Keli, with KCB, who won the Golden Boot award with 17 strikes and in 2012 John Baraza won the top scorers’ award after netting 18 goals.
“I know I can go on and become the top scorer this season. My team-mates have pushed me, backed me and encouraged me, telling me I can do it and I know I can do it. Watch this space,” Were said with a steely glint in his eyes.
The closest challenger to Were’s throne is Gor Mahia’s Michael Olunga who is on 12 goals. Who like Were has also been prolific in front of goal this season and who currently away at club duty in Tanzania.
Last season the Kenya international scored nine goals for the brewers and ended up as the second runner up in the Kenya Premier League Top Scorer’s list behind winner Sserunkuma and joint second placed Enoch Agwanda and Stephen Waruru.
