MATCH DAY 26 TEAM OF THE WEEK

After an exciting weekend that saw Gor Mahia pad their lead on top of the log with a four point cushion, we take a close look at the players who stood out from the rest. The team of the week lines up in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation.

In goal is Duncan Ochieng’, the back four include Simon Mbugua, Jackson Saleh, Mohammed Hassan and Godfrey Walusimbi. The midfield has Osborne Monday and Dennis Odhiambo in central midfield as George Odhiambo and David King’atua parade on the flanks. Humphrey Mieno features in attack just behind the league’s top scorer Dan Sserunkuma

Duncan Ochieng’

His return from a long injury layoff coincided with a return to winning ways for Tusker after a poor run of 5 consecutive draws. He authoritatively commanded his backline and made a couple of good saves to ensure that they kept a clean sheet and protect their slim one goal margin which was enough to help them collect maximum points.

Simon Mbugua

He combined well with Wycliffe Opondo on the right flank and also recovered on time to defend well. He delivered a searching cross that King’atua calmly finished off for his second goal of the match.

Mohammed Hassan

Nicknamed ‘Rio’ by Ulinzi Stars fans due to his no nonsense approach when conducting his defensive duties; he was the hero for his team against Chemelil. He rose high to nod in the winner nine minutes from time.

Jackson Saleh

He proved his critics wrong and justified his inclusion in the national team with a solid display against Nakuru All Stars. This ensured that AFC Leopards kept a clean sheet and improved their tally to 32 points.

Godfrey Walusimbi

The Uganda number 3 was in blistering form on the left channel for Gor Mahia. He picked out George Odhiambo for the third goal of the league leaders.

Osborne Monday

The midfield maestro was on top of things against Mathare United almost single handedly pulling the strings in midfield. The man of the match accolade was well deserved and his call up to the national team proves he is at the peak at the moment.

Humphrey Mieno

Calm and collected he sent Shaban Odoji the wrong way from the spot for the opening goal of AFC Leopards. He would have easily scored a hatrick were it not for Odoji’s heroics in goal. He completed what was a good afternoon for him by putting Jacob Keli through for the second goal for his side.

Dennis Odhiambo

The Thika United skipper led his charges from the front with a commanding display in midfield. He combined well with King’atua and capped his fantastic performance with a goal in the 90th minute.

David King’atua

The left footed wizard wowed the club with his dazzling runs, trickery and quick feet. He netted twice before half time to ensure Thika United settled in well into the game. His first goal is definitely a contender for goal of the season.

George Odhiambo

Blackberry seems to have regained his form at the right time. He scored Gor Mahia’s third goal just before the half time break and was a constant thorn into the City Stars defense and his combination with Sserunkuma will certainly yield more goals going forward.

Dan Sserunkuma

He bagged a hatrick and increased his tally to 15 goals and is the league’s top scorer. He was the tormentor-in-chief showing no mercy against his former club. Gor Mahia will soon accord him legendary status if he maintains his scoring form.
