Muhoroni Youth beat Sofapaka 1-0 to land their first win of the season. The Kenyan Premier League match was played on Saturday 20 at home to Muhoroni in Muhoroni.
Muhoroni who needed to bounce back from last weekend’s 2-0 loss to new comers Rangers FC, looked set from the word go and were very effective on the left flank which had new signing Sammy Ndungu and Yusuf Mohammed. Ndungu proved a handful for the Sofapaka defense with his speedy runs; his first touch handed the host the first corner in the 2nd minute.
Wycliffe Ochomo landed the first real chance at goal in the 6th minute, but his header was easily collected by Sofapaka keeper Mutuyimana. On the other end Oscar Oketch failed to control a sublime pass in the box allowing Faruk Shikalo to easily collect the ball in the 22nd minute.
Ochomo made no mistake in the 27th minute tapping in a rebound from Francis Ocholla’s initial shot, sparking wild celebrations from the partisan Muhoroni Youth home support.
David Ouma’s men could not find an immediate answer as Muhoroni kept piling pressure till the half time break.
Sofapaka mad a double sub on resumption, introducing Heritier Luvualu and Nyakan for Oscar Oketch and Karanja in the 56th minute.
Muhoroni responded by introducing a defender, Kennedy Rono for Sammy Ndungu, as they sought to keep the lead.
The proceedings still favored the hosts who pressed even more in search for the second goal. Yusuf Mohammed picked Arita in the box with a long pass in the 74th minute, but the his control failed him, handling the ball instead.
Arita was wasteful again in the 80th minute from a prime position, after being put through by Francis Ochola. The Awasi side kept on pilling the pressure but Sofapaka defense stood tall, dealing with all threats which came their way.
The talking point of the second half will be Sofapaka’s penalty claim which ref ignored after John Kelwish appeared to have been brought down in the box in the extra minutes.
