Gor Mahia edged Nzoia Sugar 1-0 to move two points clear of Posta Rangers at the apex of the Kenyan Premier League standings after eleven rounds of fixtures on Sunday.
Rwandan Meddie Kagere’s first half goal at the Mumias Complex, from a defensive lapse, sealed the three points for the 15-times champions.
Posta were held to the second barren draw in a row by Nakumatt to ease the pressure slightly on Gor.
Gor’s head coach Ze Maria lauded Nzoia’s resilience, “It was a very tough match, because they have a very good team which consists young players who run a lot. I saw a team a worriers’ spirit: fighting for each ball.”
Tusker’s renaissance continued on Sunday with a 2-1 win over floundering Sony Sugar.
The win was the fifth on the trot for the Sam Nsimbe’s charges, which opened their title campaign by losing their first two matches.
Veteran Allan Wanga and Michael Khamati netted for the brewers with Moses Asembeka scoring the consolation for the millers.
They win saw Tusker keep the fourth spot on the log with 21 points.
Nsimbe had this to say: “It was not an easy match. We came all the way from Kericho and trained twice for the match and managed to collect maximum points.
The fighting spirit shows that we are competing and not just participating in the league.”
Ulinzi Stars made it three out of three with a 2-1 win over staggering Muhoroni Youth at Afraha Stadium on Saturday.
Prodigy Samuel Onyango and Boniface Onyango netted for the coach Benjamin Nyagweso’s side with Thomas Venval reducing the deficit for the visitors.
The Soldiers remain third on the log on 21 points same as Tusker but with a superior goal difference.
Kariobangi Sharks meteoric rise also continued on Saturday. Once rooted at the bottom of the log together with fellow newbie Zoo Kericho, Sharks’ impressive rebirth has seen them occupy fifth spot on the log with 19 points after edging Bandari by Mathew Odongo’s lone strike at Machakos Stadium.
Western Stima crawled out of the bottom pit of the log after overpowering Mathare United 3-2 in a five-goal thriller in Kisumu on Saturday.
Goals from Kennedy Otieno, Moses Arita and Bernard Ondiek ended Stima’s four-game winless streak and extended Mathare’s to three matches.
Chrispin Oduor scored a double for the Slum Boys on the day.
