Gor Mahia manager Dylan Kerr has lauded his charges’ show of strong character following Saturday’s hard fought 2-0 triumph over Tusker FC at soggy Kericho Green Stadium.
Seen as unstoppable in the Kenyan Premier League title race this season, the win took the 15-time champions 12 points clear at the top of the standings on 52 points with a game at hand.
Rwandan striker Meddie Kagere and Kenya international George “Blackberry” Odhiambo goals in each half of the hotly contested game sealed the three points for Gor.
Despite heavy rains and slippery surface, K’Ogalo looked unperturbed and managed to master the conditions better than the hosts and from onset were the hungriest for maximum points.
Kerr believes it all boils down to strong character within the playing unit.
“This game is probably one of the best games I have seen for character for heart for endeavor from my players today because it was a tough game under tough conditions,” Kerr told Soka25east.com.
“I had the experience, in Britain we play in such conditions for five months a season,”
“We had to play percentage play, when in their half then we can play, get the balls in the channels, get the balls behind them and when they get the ball we get it back, simple,” he added.
The Englishman refused to be dragged into the title talk reiterating their aim is to take one game at a time.
“We don’t talk about the title, we concentrate on the next game which is against Sofapaka on Wednesday in Kisumu,” the former Simba coach said.
He further praised his players for heeding his demands and mastering his system of play.
“Credit to my players, they are getting used to our mentality, getting used to our demands and it’s amazing.”
Gor’s closest challengers and Wednesday opponents Sofapaka fell 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz further easing pressure on them and shaping the title charge into a one horse race.
