Gor Mahia beat Sofapaka 2-1 in an enthralling Kenyan Premier League Wednesday tie at Kisumu Stadium.

The win was sweet for K’Ogalo who succumbed to the revived Batoto Ba Mungu in the first stanza at Kinoru Stadium, Meru.

On form Kenyan international George “Blackberry” Odhiambo put the hosts in the lead nine minutes into play for his second goal in two successive matches.

The coach Dylan Kerr’s charges however back peddled in the better part of the half allowing the visitors back into the game.

Red hot Umaru Kasumbu headed home the leveler in the 41st minute sparking wild protests for offside, the goal nonetheless stood.

The game ended 1-1 at half time.

The second half was an end to end affair and highly entertaining.

Rwandan striker Jacques Tuyisenge missed from the spot in the 60th minute after Odhiambo was brought down in the box.

His fellow countryman Meddie Kagere atoned for the loss four minutes later with a tight header from Francis Kahata left cross.

Sofapaka pressed hard for an equalizer with Kasumba missing a couple of clear chances.

Gor on the other missed countless opportunities to extend their lead with Karim Nzigiyimana, Odhiambo and Kagere being biggest culprits.

There final whistle was a huge relief for the entire Gor fraternity with fans bursting in song and dance.

The 15-time champions take their lead at the stop of the standings to 48 points.

Sofapaka remain fourth – 11 points off the leaders.
