Ghana forward Kwesi Appiah says Confederation of African Football (CAF) made a good decision to switch the Africa Cup of Nations from January/February to June/July.
The tournament will also have 24 teams from the current 16 teams and will continue being hosted on African soil, as opposed to suggestions by a section of the executive committee members to organise it on other continent.
This was arrived at last Thursday in the first African Football Symponsium that was held in Rabat,Morocco.
Though the decision has generates mixed reactions,Appiah says the decision will put into bed the usual club versus country player conudrum.
“I never would have had that problem myself,” Appiah told the BBC.
“But you probably do get some players who pull out because they don’t want to leave or upset their club.
“They don’t want to lose their place in the team.
“No manager would come out openly and say I don’t want my player to play in this tournament.
“But I’m sure there is some pressure behind closed doors.”
According to Caf, the new order will commence from the 2019 Afcon in Cameroon.
Appiah, currently on the books of English third tier side AFC Wimbledon, played for Ghana as the Black Stars reached the final of the 2015 tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
