As the Liberia Women’s under-17 prepare to confront Ghana in the ongoing CAF U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, Technical Director Henry Browne is looking at the bigger picture – increasing the visibility of the game.
In 2019, the Liberia Football Association (LFA) scheduled a record number of international friendlies. Nine matches for the under-20 and senior national team took place in Banjul, Bo and Makeni and Monrovia.
The under-20, making its third appearance since 2016, have a two-legged tie with Cameroon, at the U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, having eliminated Guinea 7-5 on aggregate.
At the same time, the senior national team have a first round two-legged tie with Senegal for this years’ Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers in April following some impressive results during a series of friendly matches in Sierra Leone in December.
As per Browne, the plan is to continue the awareness for women’s football.
“This was a suggestion from President Mustapha Raji as part of our administration’s objective to create more awareness for women’s football.
So we had to sit down to consider a number of factors before going to the communities.
He went on: “Some of you will recall that we had female football in the national county sports meet for the first time during the 2018/2019 edition with four counties.
That was a huge success because many persons became aware of female football. We also had exhibition matches during this year’s edition.
“It’s not just only about our matches with Ghana and Cameroon. It was also about motivating young people, especially girls, to play football because seeing, like we know, is believing,” added Browne.
Liberia’s female under-17 squad trained at the Tusa field in Gardnersville on February 17 ahead of the Match 1 clash with Ghana.
They are making their debut in the 2020 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
