Enterprising star, Riyad Mahrez has called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to consider holding the Africa Cup of Nations every four years instead of every two.
The Algerian captain who plays for Manchester City who won the Afcon trophy with the Desert Foxes in Egypt last year says the tournament should also be held in the middle of the year so that it does not conflict with the European season.
“Let’s make AFCON once every four years and in summer,” Mahrez said in an Instagram Live interview.
“We loved Egypt, it wasn’t too hot. Every two years and in winter, that is why African football is not respected.
“You have a crazy amount of action
in your own clubs, then you leave for two months.”
Mahrez also welcomed the idea of adding to the squad the Lyon duo Houssem Aouar
and Rayan Cherki, both of Algerian descent.
Aouar can also play for France and also qualifies to play for the African Champions.
“If Aouar wants to play for France, it’s not a problem,” Mahrez said. “If he wants to play in Algeria with us, he is welcome. It’s his choice, it’s his career.
“Rayan Cherki I haven’t seen him play much. He is still too young to talk about his future in selection.”
