Malawian Mwawi Kumwenda who replaced Ivorian Yaya Toure as the new face of Airtel ……has been named by the The International World Games Association (IWGA) as the 2015 athlete of the year.
The Malawi National Netball team shooter had to beat a lisy of 17 athletes from other continents to the coveted crown
The voting session ended on 31 January, with Kumwenda registering 17910 with the runners up managing a paltry 9168 votes.
“I have just received an email to confirm that I am now officially IWGA athlete of the year 2015. I thank God for this time of the year,” wrote Mwawi on her Facebook timeline.
She becomes the first Malawian and African to win such an award.
She was named player of the tournament at last year’s netball tourney in Australia where she had a shot success rate of 91 percent and netted 321 goals in eight games.
She is currently playing her netball in New Zealand.
