Mamelodi Sundowns continued with their winning streak in the CAF Champions League group stages as they overcame TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi to make it three wins in three games.
Masandawana went into this game with high spirits after beating CR Belouizdad by five goals to one. The win leaves Masandawana on top of group B with nine points after three games.
No changes were made to the team that won the last game in Tanzania, with Denis Onyango keeping his place in goals after being substituted at half time in Dar Es Salaam.
It was not the perfect start for both sides as neither could find time to settle on the ball and dictate terms. The home side were the first ones to test Onyango but the Ugandan was alert to make sure nothing passed him, a few minutes later the shot-stopper was again called to save Kabanza’s shot as he kept the score at 0-0. The Ravens kept pressing Masandawana but the defence stood tall and let nothing go past, Themba Zwane had a chance to grab the lead before half time but saw his shot saved by the keeper.
The second half had the same tempo as the first and Thapelo Morena had two chances to take the lead but both his shots were blocked in quick succession by the TP Mazembe defence. It took sixty-eight minutes for Masandawana to grab the lead as Peter Shalulile beat the keeper at close range for the opener.
TP Mazembe got the equaliser as substitute Tresor Mputu beat Onyango to make the score 1-1 in the last seven minutes of the game.
With time ticking and the game looking to end in a stalemate, Lyle Lakay stepped up and slotted a freekick past the keeper to make it 2-1 and seal the victory for the Brazilians. The win for Downs is their first away victory against TP Mazembe.
