Kenyan international defender Brian Onyango Mandela was the Hero of the day as he steered Maritzburg United to a famous 2:1 victory over South African league giants Orlando Pirates in a league encounter played at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The team of choice looked impressive from the start and found the breakthrough early in the second half from a close range finish by Bevan Fransman from a Deolin Mekoa assist before the towering former Tusker Fc defender headed home Mekoa’s cross in the 68th minute to send the home crowd into frenzy.
Orlando Pirates put up a spirited fight back for a comeback and managed to score their consolation goal in the 83rd minute courtesy of substitute Ayanda Nkosi but it was not enough to salvage the match result.
