South Africa’s Marumo Gallants completed back to back victories in their opening two matches of Group A in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup with a 2-1 victory away to St Eloi Lupopo on Sunday.
Gallants had started their campaign with a 4-1 victory at home against Libya’s Al Akhdar last weekend, and the win on enemy territory now sails them to six points at the apex of the group.
Lupopo have now lost two matches in a row having suffered a 3-0 defeat away to USM Alger last weekend and sit bottom of the pile.
Gallants had a good start and found themselves in the lead after 34 minutes via Mpho Mvelase’s neat finish.
They continued their dominance with Lupopo struggling to get their feet on the ground and the South African side notched their second three minutes to the break with striker Ranga Chivaviro netting his third goal of the group phase following his double last weekend.
In the second half, the home side came back under pressure to get back into the match and they began with good pace.
They brought on Massamba Kiesse, Harvey Ossete and Kazema Basso to improve their forward line. They however had to wait till the 82nd minute to halve the deficit through Patou Kabango.
The goal added some fire under their bellies, but they couldn’t complete the comeback.
They will hope for better tidings in their next match when they take on Al Akhdar while Gallants face Alger.
