The 2009 Kenyan Premier Club (KPL) champions Mathare United will not shop for players from other clubs despite getting a new sponsor.
Club Chairman Bob Munroe disclosed that unlike other clubs that go for big names after getting funding they will continue to tap talents from within their youth structures .
“We have over 5,000 players through our youth development programme at the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) that we are spoilt for choice on whom to accommodate in the team. We would also like to give
the upcoming youthful players an opportunity of playing in the top flight league through Mathare United,” he said.
Munro said they will utilize the funds to give the current players better terms of service instead of using them to poach or seek for new players from elsewhere.
“With this sponsorship from Britam gone are the days when our players were poached left, right and centre due to lack of better terms because we were cash strapped. With this funding we shall be able to keep the,” he said.
Britam unveiled a Sh75 million sponsorship for the next three years that will cover players’, team officials’ and coaching salaries, allowances, club logistics as well as kitting the team with a new set of Britam branded jerseys.
Britam’s Managing Director Dr Benson Wairegi said the sponsorship will be renewed at the end of the three years depending on Mathare United’s performance in the league.
