The launch of the 2018 Mozambique Football League, Mocambola, has been postponed to allow the Mozambican clubs to prepare for the return leg of the preliminary round of CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup without pressure of playing league matches.
The league was scheduled to begin on February 24 this year but will now return on March 3rd, the country’s football federation, FMF, decided on Tuesday.
Two Mozambican teams União Sportiva de Sondo and the Costa do Sol will be in action on 21 February 2018, in Beira and in Gaberone to play in Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively.
Uniao Sportiva were held to a one all draw last weekend by Comoros side away in Moroni and they will need a win or a draw so that they can make it to the second round of the competition.
Costal do Sol beat debutants Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana 1-0 on Saturday at the Estadio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo courtesy of Liberian-import Terrence Tisdell a late winner. They will now need a draw of any kind in order to progress.
Close sources to the Mozambican federation has however revealed to us that the step to postpone the league has also been contributed by un-availability of most of the pitches next weekend as well as complexity of logistics for some of teams which will be participating in the league.
Mocambola officials are said to be shopping for more partners that will make the league viable. The new partner is scheduled to be unveiled on Thursday and it is understood he will put some cash to offer offering its most decorated player at the end of the season.
