Morocco picked up their first win of the World Cup in Qatar by upsetting tournament favorites Belgium 2-0 at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday.
Two second half Goals from Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal gave Morocco the win over the Red Devils.
Sabiri gave the Atlas Lions the lead with a fantastic free kick in the 73rd minute to beat Belgium keeper Courtois who had no chance.
Aboukhlal sealed the victory deep into stoppage time to take Morroco top of Group F.
Morocco deserved the win on the day as they created more chances in the game. The North Africans were unlucky as they had a goal disallowed by VAR. Hakim Ziyech striking a free kick in swet fashion. However, Romain Saiss was adjudged to be offside blocking the view of the goalkeeper.
The game was played at high intensity with the Belgium team relying on Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard to do the business. But none could penetrate the resolute Morocco defense line.
Morocco thought they had taken the lead at the end of the first half but Ziyech’s free kick was ruled for offside.
But Walid Regragui’s men were rewarded with the three points with Sabiri and Aboukhlal striking late to shock the Belgian side.
Next up for Morocco is Canada on Thursday 1 December.
