FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced during his 2022 FIFA World Cup final press conference that the FIFA Council have decided that Morocco will host the 2023 Club World Cup in February.
The home of the Atlas Lions has already hosted the tournament in 2014, but will be hosting one of the last editions before a 32-team revamp which is set to come in 2025.
The current format normally involves seven teams who face each other off : the winners of each confederation’s cup play in the tournament, including the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Champions League. Infantino however did warn of the scheduling of the international match calendar to “take into consideration the health and well-being of players” –
Morocco have had a historic run in the 2022 World Cup which saw them become the first African team to reach the semi-final stage of the competition. The Atlas Lions face off against Croatia in the third place play-off on Saturday, in a hope for a Bronze medal to reward their record-breaking World Cup run
