The biggest surprise of the KPL Easter weekend is definitely the 3-2 thrashing of domestic cup holders Sofapaka in the hands of Stima away in the beautiful lake side city of Kisumu as Nakuru All Stars finally put to end losing streak stretching over four matches.
Western Stima 3-2 Sofapaka
What a huge harvest it was for the electricity men on Sunday afternoon at the Moi Stadium Kisumu; it was unexpected for the 2009 champions and the 2014 KPL runners up to receive such a beating, but let’s give it to the coach Omino men who have been on a roll this season winning four out of five matches and are currently top of the log with 12 points.
Stima went ahead in the 27th minute from Ronald Okoth goal before former Gor Mahia wizard Kevin ‘Ade’ Omondi equalized for Batoto ba Mungu, Fiston Abdul Razak then put the visitors in the driving seat in the 47th minute.
Fred Shimonyo grabbed a brace leveling scores for Stima in the 74th minute before adding the winner in 80th minute.
Sofapaka western region tour continues on Wednesday when they visit Muhoroni Youth in Awendo.
Nakuru All Stars 1-0 Sony Sugar FC
The Peter Okidi coached side celebrated maiden 2015 season win when his boys dismissed the Nyanza side 1-0 thanks to Boniface Akenga goal, Akenga should have added another from the spot in the second half but he wasted the golden opportunity. The match was played at the Afraha stadium on Sunday April 6, 2015.
Nakuru All Stars came into this game from 4 games losing streak and were desperate to turn the tides, Sony on the other side were still basking in the glory of beating Ushuru 1-0 at home in their last fixture. All Stars are not out of the hoods just yet as they are still glued in the danger zone one place above winless City Stars.
AFC Leopards 1-1 Thika United
Broke Leopards displayed uninspiring game at the Mumias Sports Complex in another Sunday fixture to settle for a draw against the milk men, Ingwe as AFC Leopards is called by the adoring fans are known to have impressive record at the Mumias stadium a fortress of sort but were less convincing in this encounter.
Assistant coach Yusuf Chippo handled the match in the absence of head coach Zdrakvo Logarusic who has vowed never to come near the team without pay; Ingwe owes players and technical bench money in salary and allowances.
Nigerian import Austin Ikenna headed in Timonah Wanyonyi cross in the 27th minute for the opener before Jackson Macharia equalized for Thika 5 minutes later. Second half was a tale of missed chances as both sides wasted goal scoring opportunities to finally settle for the draw. Ingwe is 5th in the log while Thika is placed 8th with 8 and 6 points respectively from 5 matches a piece.
Mathare United 2-0 City Stars
Stanley Okumbi charges inflicted more misery on the Kawangware side thrushing them 2-0 in another Sunday fixture staged at the City Stadium; National U23 pair of Harrison Mwendwa and Robinson kamura scored a goal apiece in the 20th and 80th minute respectively to condemn City to 5th straight loss a record that can only come close to Ushuru’s 10 winless streak last season.
Mathare continues to grow strength by strength as they registered second win of the season which propelled them to 4th spot in the KPL log; on the other end City Stars is deeply rooted in the relegation zone a place they have made their home since last season.
Muhoroni Youth 1-1 Ushuru FC
The hosts who showed insatiable hunger for goal throughout the match went ahead in the 13th minute courtesy of Anthony Nyangor bullet header from Nigerian import Abbas Akiyemi cross just outside the box to send the home fans into a frenzy; the lead lasted 19 minutes as Ushuru’s quest for an equalizer paid off from Marasowe’s wonder strike from the edge of the box from a brilliant solo effort to silence the vocal fans.
The score sheet remained the same into the breather; Youth continued from where they left coming into the second half more rejuvenated forcing Ushuru keeper Ali Kimera into save after the other. The best scoring chance of the second half landed Muhoroni way in the 83rd minutes when Abbas’ speculative delivery into the box found Geoffrey Osama unmarked but he blasted wide with keeper to beat.
Ken Kenyatta made a tactical substitution pulling out impressive Kateregga who was a thorn in the Muhoroni flesh from the right wing for defender Eric Masika in the last 15 minutes of the game a sigh he was gaoing for a draw.
Ushuru is placed 12th and Muhoroni 13th in the KPL table with 5 points each from 5 games, they separated by goal difference.
