Horoya AC forward Ouedraogo Bassirou nearly drowned before being rescued from Atlantic Ocean few hours after his team’s CAF Champions League 2-1 victory over AS Togo Port, away in Lome.
Bassirou wasn’t breathing and had to undergo reanimation efforts before being rushed to un-named medical facility.
This has been confirmed by Horoya AC’s deputy President, Soafine Souare who says the player had joined his colleagues in celebration after their win when the accident occurred on the beach.
“I got a phone call telling me what had happened on the beach. Immediately, we went to the hospital where he was evacuated to find out exactly what happened.
“We were informed that Bassirou made a spectacular jump into water where he fell back on his neck and immediately the waves begun to carry him away.
“His team mate Mohammed Djibo made an effort and was able to save him. He was unconscious and had drunk a lot of water. He was resuscitated before being transported to the clinic,” Souare told Guinee Goal, a French publication based in Conackry.
Bassirou has already underwent a surgery and reportedly may not play football again. He is currently under life support as he has a heartbeat but a machine is breathing for him
“According to the doctors, Bassirou was really lucky as this kind of accident leads directly to death. We hope he will recover quickly and will continue to play football, ” Souare added.
The explosive striker is likely to spend two weeks in hospital before being transfered to Guinea and will not feature in Horoya’s next Group C match against 2016 champions Mamelodi Sundowns set to be played on March 15 in Conakry.
